Wendy Lu

Artist member since 2026
Toronto, Ontario

Wendy Lu is a Hard of Hearing, Taiwan-born, Toronto-based multimedia artist whose work transforms personal experience into compelling visual language. She graduated from York University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA), Specialized Honours in Visual Arts. She lost her hearing at age three due to meningitis and later underwent left-brain surgery and three cochlear implant surgeries in her right ear. Wendy’s artistic practice spans drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, mixed media, illustration, and digital art. Combining traditional craftsmanship with contemporary techniques, she uses diverse methods to create layered, textured imagery in oil, acrylic, gouache, watercolour, pencil, and marker. Blending realism, surrealism, and abstraction, Wendy has developed a distinctive voice that bridges tradition and contemporary expression. Her art explores urban landscapes, green architecture, and breakthrough technologies, aiming to foster sustainable communities and support mental health. Her work functions as a visual thought experiment, creatively expanding on a wide range of concepts and references while mapping out forms of non-normative experiences and possibilities. Resilience and experimentation define her practice, transforming challenges into opportunities for creative exploration while engaging audiences and offering fresh perspectives in contemporary art.

Everyone should know about

I am committed to creating new artworks for exhibitions and collaborations through experimentation, research, and engagement with contemporary visual culture, technology, and evolving environments. My work is conceptually driven, visually impactful, and responsive to social and cultural conditions, while maintaining a distinct artistic voice.

Why is it important for people to have art in their home or life?

Having artworks in homes and daily life shapes emotional atmosphere, deepens perception, and transforms everyday environments into meaningful spaces. Art brings identity, memory, and cultural expression, while fostering comfort, reflection, and well-being through ongoing visual engagement. Artworks enrich everyday environments by elevating perception, supporting emotional depth, and shaping how people experience and relate to the world.

How long have you been creating art?

I have been creating artworks for many years, developing a rigorous artistic practice through experimentation, technical refinement, and conceptual inquiry. My work spans multiple mediums, each engaging form, colour, texture, and composition in distinct ways. This practice reflects a commitment to material exploration and visual investigation, where each of my artworks contributes to a broader dialogue between perception, process, and meaning.
